Swine flu is a contagious respiratory disease that usually affects pigs. It is caused by a type-A influenza virus. The current strain is a new variation of an H1N1 virus, which is a mix of human and animal versions. When the flu spreads person-to-person, instead of from animals to humans, it can continue to mutate, making it harder to treat or fight off because people have no natural immunity. How it spreads? Although people typically get swine flu from contact with pigs, there have been cases of person-to-person transmission. Experts think coughing, sneezing and contaminated surfaces can spread the infection among people, but it is unknown how easily that happens. The virus cannot be obtained through eating properly cooked pork or any pork product. WHO declares swine flu outbreak in US, Mexico Panel meets to discuss solution for swine flu in India Symptoms The symptoms are similar to common flu. They include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Infection from the virus can lead to severe illness, including pneumonia and respiratory failure and can be fatal. Treatment Antiviral drugs, such as oseltamivir or zanamivir, are recommended for treatment and prevention of swine flu. Antiviral drugs are precription medicines that keep flu viruses from reproducing in the body. These drugs work best if treatment is started within two days of the onset of symptoms. Nations prepare for flu worst As more cases of swine flu are reported in various parts of the world, governments and health officials have scrambled to take precautions to prevent the outbreak from entering their borders. Quarantine officers monitor arrivals with a thermographic device at Bangkok's main international airport.
After taking more than 150 lives in Mexico alone, swine flu has been declared a medical emergency by the World Health Organisation. With 11 confirmed cases in the US, two in UK, two in British Columbia, three in Nova Scotia and five suspected cases in Canada, countries world wide are taking measures and issuing travel advisories. India has alerted those travelling to Mexico, USA, Canada, France and New Zealand. Passengers flying into India from affected countries will be screened at six major Indian airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Goa Several Asian and middle eastern countries have stepped up protective measures to curb the spread of the virus. Also Britain has detected the first two cases of swine flu - a Scottish couple who were honeymooning in Mexico. It's too late to contain the swine flu virus says the WHO. It has raised its alert level from three to four and is just short of declaring it a full pandemic. Alert four means human to human transfer of virus is possible. Swine flu facts Swine flu is a respiratory disease associated with pigs, but in this case the H1N1 strain of swine flu has affected humans and is spreading through human-to-human contact. This means it can continue to mutate, making it hard to treat. H1N1 viruses characterised in this outbreak has not been previously detected in pigs or humans. The symptoms are similar to those of regular flu - fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue, diarrhea, and vomiting. There in no vaccine for the virus, though experts recommend the use Tamiflu. As a precautionary measure, people are being advised to avoid travel to affected areas . Avoid exposure to people who have the flu and follow good hygiene practices like washing hands regularly.
The Indian government has issued travel advisories to its citizens who are traveling to the US, Mexico and Canada. The World Health Organization has declared Swine Flu outbreak a "public health emergency of international concern." Up to 103 people have died of the disease in Mexico alone while more than 1,500 cases are under observation. Canada has reported six cases, and the US, has reported 20 cases which have been categorised as being mild. In Washington, the US government has declared a public health emergency. Spain has confirmed the first case of swine flu in Europe, while Israel and New Zealand too are investigating cases of swine flu. Fears that it may turn into a pandemic has prompted the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Health Ministry to propose preventive action. Screening of passengers at six airports has already begun and the Centre prepares for a possible outbreak. The Director General of ICMR, V M Katoj said, “If you have a suspect, there will be medical doctors at the airport, and if they suspect somebody (to be carrying the disease) then they quarantine that person and take specimen for investigation. We have already designated certain laboratories which will do the checking.” What is Swine Flu It's a respiratory disease associated with pigs. Friday Bob works hard at the office but spends two nights each week bowling, and plays golf every Saturday.
His wife thinks he's pushing himself too hard, so for his birthday she takes him to a localstrip club.
The doorman at the club greets them and says, 'Hey, Bob! How ya doin?'
His wife is puzzled and asks if he's been to this club before.
'Oh no,' says Bob. 'He's in my bowling league.
When they are seated, a waitress asks Bob if he'd like his usual and brings over a Budweiser.
His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, 'How did she know that you drink Budweiser?'
'I recognize her, she's the waitress from the golf club.
I always have a Bud at the end of the 1st nine, honey.'
A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Bob, starts to rub herself all over him and says, 'Hi Bobby. Want your usual table dance, big boy?'
Bob's wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club.
Bob follows and spots her getting into a cab.
Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her.
Bob tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it .
She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every 4 letter word in the book.
Caution... They Walk Among Us! Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: 'Free to good home. You want it, you take it..' For three days the fridge sat there without even one person looking twice at it. He eventually decided that people were too un-trusting of this deal. It looked to good to be true, so he changed the sign to read: 'Fridge for sale $50.' The next day someone stole it!
